Solstice Tree: A Story of a Forest in Times of Darkness and Light
Forty miles off shore, within the dunes of Provincetown Massachusetts, exists an equally beloved and unusual stand of trees. Beech Forest, now protected by the Cape Cod National Seashore, represents what Cape Cod might have looked like before the arrival of the pilgrims over 400 years ago. The emergence of a new foliar disease threatens this unique stretch of land as well as the hundreds of species that call it home. In the face of climate and global change, this story of loss to our forests and biodiversity echoes throughout the Northeast and beyond. Through a six month walking project at Beech Forest completed between the solstices, artist Grace Emmet lovingly confronts the realities of the environmental crisis beginning in her own community through sustained attention and observation.
